Why I wrote Carmella the Famous Baker: A Story of Hope, Resilience, and Embracing Dyslexia

drrinatgreen

As my book, Carmella the Famous Baker, is soon to be released, I wanted to take a moment and share why I wrote this book and what I hope people will take away about dyslexia.

Writing Carmella the Famous Baker has been an extremely fulfilling experience. As a psychologist and advocate for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be for kids to navigate a world that doesn’t always understand their struggles. Through my work, and as the founder of Kol Koreh, an organization that supports children with learning challenges, I have come to deeply appreciate the resilience, creativity, and potential in every child. But I’ve also seen the emotional toll it takes when their talents are overlooked because they don’t fit neatly into the traditional education system.

Why Did I Write This Book?

I wrote Carmella the Famous Baker to provide a voice and a sense of hope to these children. Carmella’s story is about more than just baking—it’s about having a dream, facing setbacks, and finding the courage to keep going despite those challenges. Carmella represents all of the children who feel “different” or “less than” because they can’t read as fast or easily as their peers. I wanted her journey to inspire those who feel they don’t measure up to recognize their own unique strengths and embrace their individuality.

One of the main reasons for writing this book was to create a story where kids with dyslexia can see themselves as the hero. So often, these children are faced with feelings of inadequacy because they struggle with reading or learning in the conventional sense. I wanted to show them that their struggles don’t define them. Their creativity, persistence, and determination do!

What I Hope People Will Come to Understand About Dyslexia

Dyslexia is often a misunderstood condition. Many people think it’s simply about reversing letters or reading slowly, but it’s so much more than that. Dyslexia affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language, which can make traditional reading and writing extremely difficult. But dyslexia doesn’t affect intelligence. In fact, people with dyslexia often possess extraordinary talents in areas like problem-solving, creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking.

Through Carmella the Famous Baker, I want people to understand that children with dyslexia are not “less than” or incapable of success. Their brains work differently, yes, but that difference is a strength, not a weakness. By sharing Carmella’s journey—her struggles, her triumphs, and her persistence—I hope to change the narrative around dyslexia. I want parents, teachers, and kids to see dyslexia not as an obstacle, but as one of the many facets that can contribute to a person’s uniqueness and success.

Looking Forward

My hope is that this book reaches beyond just the children it was written for. I want parents, teachers, and anyone who loves and supports a child with dyslexia to take away a deeper understanding and empathy for what these kids experience. I want them to see that dyslexia is not something to be marginalized or hidden, but embraced. It is one of the many beautiful ways the brain works, and with the right support and encouragement, these children can accomplish incredible things.

For me, Carmella the Famous Baker is more than just a story—it’s a message to all the children out there struggling with dyslexia, and to anyone overcoming obstacles: You are capable, talented, and can achieve your dreams, just like Carmella. Children with dyslexia can be taught to read and have so much potential. Supporting them as they navigate their struggles helps build resilience and has a lasting impact on their lives.

I hope you’ll enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Together, let’s spread Carmella’s message of hope and encouragement to children facing dyslexia or other challenges, empowering them to shine their beautiful, unique light on the world.
